dan diluncurkan pada Maret 1959. Ruth Handler pengusaha Amerika juga ikut turut bagian dengan penciptaan boneka menggunakan boneka Jerman bernama Bild Lilli sebagai inspirasi nya.

Nah Ceritanya begini..
Suatu ketika Ruth melihat anak perempuannya, Barbara bermain boneka kertas
Lalu dia meliat celah bisnis, kalau bisa membuat boneka dewasa (dulu boneka di US hanya bentuk boneka bayi).
Lalu dia bilang ke suaminya, co-founder of the mettel toy company. Ternyata suaminya kurang tertarik
Selama perjalanan ke Eropa pada 1956 dengan anak-anaknya Barbara dan Kenneth, Ruth Handler menemukan sebuah boneka mainan Bild Lilli Jerman bernama orang dewasa- boneka itu persis apa Handler pikirkan. Jadi dia membeli tiga dari mereka. Dia memberikan satu untuk putrinya dan mengambil yang lain kembali ke Mattel.Sebenarnya boneka Bild Lili bukan untuk anak anak, tapi lama lama terkenal untuk anak anak.
Setelah kembali ke Amerika Serikat, Handler kembali mendesain boneka (dengan bantuan dari insinyur Jack Ryan) dan boneka itu diberi nama baru, Barbie, singkatan dari Barbra Millicent Roberts (anak perempuannya). Boneka membuat debut di American International Toy Fair di New York pada tanggal 9 Maret 1959. Tanggal itu juga digunakan sebagai hari ulang tahun resmi Barbie.
